CALL TO WORSHIP

From John 4, John 16, and Acts 2

Jesus said:

“A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.”

“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.”

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

OPENING PRAYER

Heavenly Father.

Today we come before You,
the Giver of life and salvation,
to worship in the Spirit and in truth.

Bless us, we pray, in this time of worship.
And send upon us a fresh movement of Your Spirit.

That we might see anew the wonder of Jesus.
And become better witnesses to the Good News wherever You have placed us.

In the perfecting power of the Spirit and in Jesus’ Name we pray.
Amen.

OPENING SONG

Oh For A Thousand Tongues to Sing: Classic Version

Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease,
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life and health and peace.

He breaks the pow’r of canceled sin,
He sets the pris’ner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind behold your Savior come;
And leap ye lame for joy.

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad,
The honors of Thy name.

Oh For A Thousand Tongues to Sing: Modern Version

Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

And if I had a thousand tongues,
still I could never sing enough.

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad,
The honors of Thy name.

And if I had a thousand tongues,
still I could never sing enough.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease,
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

And if I had a thousand tongues,
still I could never sing enough.

He breaks the pow’r of canceled sin,
He sets the pris’ner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

And if I had a thousand tongues,
still I could never sing enough.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind behold your Savior come;
And leap ye lame for joy.

And if I had a thousand tongues,
still I could never sing enough.

Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

A PRAYER FOR PENTECOST

(The following Prayer can be simply read as is, or each section can be a starter for added personal prayers of praise, confession, and petition for ourselves, others, and our world)

Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life:
At the beginning of time you hovered over the face of the waters;
You gave every living thing the breath of life.
Come, Creator Spirit, and renew the whole creation.

Holy Spirit, Spirit of Sanctification:
You convict us of our sin, point us to forgiveness in Christ,
and call people to the ways of justice and compassion.
Come, Spirit of Righteousness, and burn in our hearts.

Holy Spirit, Advocate, Teacher:
You speak to us of our Lord
and show us the depth of His love.
Come, Spirit of Truth, and lead us in the way of Jesus.

Holy Spirit, Spirit of Consolation:
You illumine our minds and open our hearts,
and confirm in our spirit that we are beloved children of the Father.
Come, Spirit of Comfort, and uphold our hearts in true faith.

Holy Spirit, Wind and Flame:
You filled disciples with joy and courage,
empowering them to share Your good news.
Come, Spirit of Power, make us bold witnesses of the Gospel.

Holy Spirit, Spirit of Peace:
You break down the barriers that divide us,
and make us a people of every tongue and nation.
Come, Spirit of Reconciliation, and unite us all in the love of Christ.

Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life:
At the close of the age, all creation will be renewed to sing your praises.
Come, Creator Spirit, and make us new creations in Christ Jesus.

Amen.
